“Basskantine” (formerly “Ninos Del Sol”) is a reborn weekly Drum & Bass event in Mannheim, Germany, taking place every Thursday night in the Soho club. It was started by DJ Fileas a couple of years ago as a sequel to the weekly event series “Network” (held in ancient post-Millenium times on Saturdays by Tobi & Jonathan, back then well-known in the local scene) and is continued today by the baesse.de crew (who have consistently been pushing the intelligent and liquid sides of Drum & Bass with remarkable effort for many years).
As a matter of fact, the weekly evening in the Soho club is one of the few valuable constants the local Drum & Bass scene in Mannheim has been lucky to have in the past decade. It was one of the (maybe even THE) first serious attempts to counter the scene-dominating commercial low-quality UK-Jungle-Raves around the millenium.

Now on the 15th of July 2010, world famous DJ Hektik makes his drölfth appearence in this well respected institution, ready for a proper shakedown together with his 500 3 loyal fans.
And a very special guest has announced that he will also appear behind the decks this evening, to play a very special Nu Skool set: DJ Mindforce from the legendary Metaflex crew.
Without any doubt, this musical event will be more important to the history of mankind than anything before or after (including the global “financial crisis” of 2011, the following years of mass starvation, the official takeover of world wide neofeudalism in 2017 and Georg Schramm’s pre-emptive resignation from coporate television in June 2010).
As always in history, quality is best witnessed live - rather than reported & missed. So be there or [insert any pun].

The SUITE

Mannheim (am Busbahnhof/ZOB, nähe HBF und Hauptpost)Es ist eine kleine Weile her: Wir haben mal eine Partyreihe auf dem 2. Floor der SUITE gemacht. Die lief von Frühling 2007 bis Herbst 2008. Es war nichts Überaussergewöhnliches, aber aufgrund der Größe der “Küche” (so hiess der 2. Floor in Insiderkreisen) und unseren feierwilligen Gästen hatten alle Beteiligten mächtig Spaß.
Die ganze Geschichte hatte ein paar sehr Mannheim-untypische Features: Es gab keine MCs, und man hörte Sounds, die in der “Metropolregion” doch eher selten zu finden sind.
Unsere Bookings waren eher lokal bzw. regional orientiert, aber auch der eine oder andere exklusive und internationale Leckerbissen war dabei. So spielte ein gewisser Cooh aus Sofia (Bulgarien) ein Wahnsinns-Set zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem noch keiner daran gedacht hätte, dass er nur ein Jahr später gehörig Wellen in der DNB-Szene machen würde (mit Releases auf Labels wie Black Sun Empires Obsessions, Dylans Freak-Sublabel Obscene Recordings, Panaceas Position Chrome und und und…). Es war schön, dass auch Panacea extra zu uns kam um den ungestümen Bulgaren bei seinem Set zu feiern und zu connecten.
Ein weiteres Highlight war sicher auch die Abschlussparty bzw. Undercover-Geburtstagsfete von mir mit Flo Phace auf dem Mainfloor der alten SUITE.Natürlich waren es aber vor allem auch UNSERE Jungens und Mädels mit denen es Spass machte: Budoka und DJ Malice (of Tilt-Recordings fame), NSE und Hustlin L (Life Support Crew und Monnem Representers), DJ Sykes (feste Bank im Mannheimer DNB-Geschehen, Radiokollege und bester Moderator im Rhein-Neckar-Delta ), DJ Giant (der auch die erste Generation Flyer entworfen und designed hat: BIG UP dafür!), Matt Domino (UK Newcomer und sehr freundlicher Zeitgenosse), die gesamte Quake Inc-Posse (die mit nem Sonderzug und ner Menge Fans aus Köln angereist kam: 4802, Hi:Radiation, Jumpat) und die Finalteilnehmerin unseres DJ-Contests Nogata (”First Lady Of DNB” aus dem Ruhrgebiet).
All diese, und natürlich die Hosts Kaiza und DJ Hektik, standen und stehen alle für mehr als “nur” Neurofunk und Techno-DNB. Die iDrums verband relaxte Klänge mit Dancefloor-Madness verschiedenster Art, mit teilweise ekstatischem Geklöppel am Ende einer Nacht. Zugegeben, ein gewisser Fokus war vorhanden, aber immer mit dem Blick auf das gesamte Spektrum… Die iDrums waren eine Reise durch Drum & Bass, die abends sanft anfing und morgens heftig endete.
Warum erzähl ich das alles hier?
Nun ja, die SUITE ist mittlerweile umgezogen (liegt jetzt genau auf der anderen Seite am Hauptbahnhof), und hey, warum probieren wirs nicht nochmal?! Wir könnten jetzt all unsere speziellen Ansätze über Bord werfen und einfach mal Randall b2b Micky Finn mit Grooverider am Mic buchen. Oder wir könnten einfach spaßorientiert und mit den positiven Erinnerungen an die iDrums eine Revival-Fete abziehen: Kaiza und Hektik plus der upcoming Wahnsinns-Ösi Mefjus an den Decks (Ed Rush ist letztens bei einem Gig in Wien vom Stuhl gefallen, als er ne Mefjus-Collabo gehört hat - true story! Ausserdem checkt den Mindtech Podcast 004 mixed by Mefjus), keine MCs und das ganze im Mainfloor der neuen SUITE.
Wir würden uns freuen, die ganzen iDrums-Stammgäste, Mannheimer Junglists und Jungletten und alle anderen mal wieder zu sehen und mit ihnen ne Runde abzuraven. Und wenns gut läuft machen wir das als mal wieder und Mannheim kann doch noch mal was anderes sehen und vor allem hören als trendige House-Beats, coooole RNB-Parties und DNB-Grossraves mit 47 Floors.

Highly respected club event series, running since 2000. 3 floors, dnb being the main attraction - that is with us: technoid dnb! Should be awesome, don’t miss it if you are near Stuttgart this Saturday.
