Few more things are left to be adressed on this final occasion.

Over time, T-FREE has frequently been subject to discussions, provoking disagreement on all aspects: its musical orientation and range of varying sound quality from release to release, the public opinions and Internet behaviour of the labelmaker, the absence of artwork, the used form of presentation and the ideological fact of T-FREE being an anti-commercial netlabel. Two opposing opinions usually dominate these debates:

"puts some more established labels to shame"

Regardless of reactions, T-FREE has always followed a certain sound/style (with few exceptions), aiming at DJs, not critics. This final release continues that label policy to the end. Some of the tunes are old, some brandnew, some re-released. As usually, they came directly from the producers' computers without any additional mastering done on them. So they all have different mixdowns, loudness levels and sound characters.

Thus probably everybody will hate some tunes on this LP, but perhaps also everybody will like some tunes on it.

And hopefully this LP will stand worthy as a final release, after 184 tunes on 118 releases (plus these) in 6 years. The traffic statistics show that literally tens of thousands of people have downloded the releases (average circa 45,000). Some of the tunes have even cracked the 100,000 mark. T-FREE had a good run, brought a lot of music to many people and maybe even contributed to some Drum and Bass artist careers.

It was fun, inspiring and politically the right thing to do (from all three perspectives: before, during and after).

PS: A note for the haters. When your favourite bigname DJs play "dubplates" in their mixes, those also are unmastered tunes (from different artists) and they all sound differently.

PPS: Some quoteworthy thoughts about releasing older tunes and the general question of wether artists or audiences own works of art:

"With all due respect to the artist(s), it's kind of idiotic and egoic to not give people what they want, when no almost no effort is involved in distributing a track these days.. When you have fans who fucking dearly want something you made, there are only a few reasons why artists tend not to give them out, and only 2 of those legit.

1) Lost the file (mp3 or sequencer file, DAT tape (LOL) whatever) <-- legit

2) Doesn't want it to be released because they either hate it or thing it's 'beneath' them because their production value has improved over time. Somewhat understandable but ultimately unjustified and pretentious. Ego-based and too concerned about 'image'.

3) Some kind of record label stipulation or legal mangling <-- legit, not understandable, but legit

4) You get off on the fact that people who want something you created will never get it - then you're just a dick. Ultimate in pretension."

And now for the music.

Mav is a 20 degree black belt master of techy Athmospheric Drum and Bass. He was exposed to the broader Drum and Bass scene for the first time pretty much through the Armada Recordings launch incident in 2005. That label, planned and publically announced for well over 2 years, had advertised their first release as a 4x12" LP including Mav's "Ocean Phantom" among Noisia's "Desolation" plus Teebee remix and tunes by Corrupt Souls, Desimal and Brain. The scene waited a long time for it with great anticipation and indeed "unprecedented hype." The delay had already become a running gag when the LP was finally made available; exclusively through the Armada online shop and as a subscription series model. The label wanted to have people pay for the release, use this money to press the vinyl and then send it to the people who paid in first place. The shop script gave customers a timeframe of 6-8 weeks until delivery. 7 days after the shop opened, Teebee, a man always good for some action, made a public announcement about pulling back his remix from Armada for having not been paid until the deadline (and released it shortly after on Renegade Hardware with some different samples and entitled "The Force"). Customers were asking the label many questions and got few satisfactory answers back. Two months later the people who had bought into the subscription were given mp3s of the LP tunes (minus the Teebee remix) and offered refunds. Many of the customers downloaded the tunes instantly, many also chose to ask for the refund and some of them never got their money back. The label crew fell apart and the entire Armada bubble slowly collapsed, leaving behind one of the greatest dramas in Drum and Bass Internet History. One of the great things about this label was the indirect promotion effect for involved artists, including Mav. "Ocean Phantom" ended up as his third tune on Fokuz Limited and he also left his mark on other labels, most notably ASC's Covert Operations (incidentally a label that used a subscription model successfully). Mav's tunes are a lasting influence, musically untouchable and as epic as the Armada fail was. "Special Forces" was until now only on a mix-CD in a 2xCD joint album on Covert Operations and Warm Communications [COVWC-CD001] in 2003 and digitally available through Covert Operations, offline since 2009. Watch out for the reworked 2011 version on Mav's forthcoming LP (!)

Original release promo text: Drillcut has been producing electronic music since 2003, using different names for different styles (his other names are SpubteD, Tecimal and c13360). Aside from producing, he has been a DJ since 2002 and also does live-act performances since 2008. His first releases with Techhouse came in 2008 and now in 2010 he starts releasing Drum and Bass, again as a total newcomer despite his experience. His debut tune "Assembly" might be surprising to the unsuspecting ears of curious listeners.. Some details are reminiscent of Minimal Techno, but the tune is far from the Minimal DNB hype. Its multiple bassdrums, fast click-percussions and the overall rather technoid sounddesign in combination with the somewhat disorientated pads do exactly what hundreds of bigname producer-djs keep promising: breaking down musical borders and creating a new aesthetical approach to old music.

Original release promo text: Eiton is a young newcomer producer/DJ from France. He is part of the promoting association “UNC.Audio” and does produce as “n0te” together with Kenei. Eiton has been making waves in the Techno-DNB scene even before his first release: his epic “Kopilot” was a huge underground hit ever since mid 2008. In 2009 it was released on Impakt Records, shortly after his debut “Ethanol” (alongside a Pyro Remix) on the Digital Venom label. Original release promo text: Here is another technoid outing by the never tired German producer Kaiza and his allies Try and Error. It rolls forward very much with the Kaiza-typical fast staccato percussions which are nearly inaudible to the untrained ear but form a dynamic core within the centre of the reduced, straight halfbar beat. The bassline and bassdrums together with the snare form a virtual 4/4 structure which is broken by a concert of stabs and mangled samples and many edits, all in a counterdynamic arrangement, 100% Techno. The tune is significantly different from many older Kaiza productions in that the main elements of the beat are not so dominant in the mixdown but rather merge with the percussion layers and even the bass, creating a dense entity of interchanging rythms (the outro reveals this character of the tune by stripping it almost completely down to the beat).

Original release promo text: In 2006, a team of two producers from the Trio-Music crew made the tune “Sourcream”, released on vinyl later in the same year. Since then it has been remixed by quite a number of producers. And even though the duo behind the original has split in 2007, some of these remixes were just too good to remain unreleased. Thus, a remix album on T-Files was planned in 2008. But it did not come out as planned because one remix was not yet finished and the project was put to a halt, waiting for the last remix. Now that last remix is ready and the plan could be realized, but some time has passed and artists have moved on musically: the remixes do not anymore represent their sound and style today. So they are now finally released as an LP on T-FREE for teh ages.

Original release promo text: This tune was produced by D-Struct, Evancipation and Signal under their alias "Robot Death Squad" in 2004, some months after their celebrated tune "Hot 9mm" which was released on Moving Shadow two years later. But, by contrast, "Machine Sentry" never came out. That is perhaps because it bridges the void between classical Jungle and (seen from 2004) modern Neurofunk, combining elements from both worlds into a hybrid. Some other Robot Death Squad tunes do this as well, but the Jungle is extraordinarily strong in this one.

Original release promo text: This is not only a tune but also an example of how several people can accomplish more together than each of them alone. Originally, the tune was just an unfinished solo project, a loop of 40 seconds length which Shots had been working on. Then, Isotop (partly with Shots) did a lot of soundshaping, eqing etc and arranged it to a length of 3.5 minutes. Finally, Kaiza changed the main structure, beat and bassline, did further work on the stabs and fx and finished the tune.

Original release promo text: CJ Weaver might be known from his output on the infamous Darkland imprint, but he also had a proper release on DJ Zardonic's netlabel Zardonic Recordings in 2006. "Steel" from his new generation of tunes is a subtle tool in a minimal technoid style. On first listening it does not apply the usual Drum and Bass standard sound, but when played on the dancefloor it unveils it's real qualities. An innovative detail is that this tune does not have normal lead sounds but instead a metallic reverb/delay construction which works with even less melody than the bassline.

Original release promo text: Insecticide from Duisburg in Germany started producing Drum and Bass in 1998. One year later he had his first release, a remix of Los Angeles based Coco Street's tune Cosmic Butterfly, on NQ Entertainment. He began deejaying in 2000 and focussed his selections on deep Drum and Bass. Again one year later he joined the Subwoofercrew which hosted a radio show on the local station and organized the party series Vibration since 2001. Insecticide's musical influences range from Artists like Ravi Shankar, Thievery Corporation, DJ Krush, Resistance D and CJ Bolland to Adam Freeland, Matrix, Stakka and Skynet, Konflict, Dissident, Sinthetix and DJ EBK. He has played alongside Artist such as Kubiks, Funk and Flex, Demus J, Ragga Twins, Basstikal and so on, and production wise he looks back on collaborations with artists such as Destination Unknown, Paperclip, Budoka, Cut, Marauder, Hiten and Sniper. Due to certain circumstances, Insecticide decided to leave the Drum and Bass scene and on his way out he releases some of his unsigned tunes on T-FREE.

Original release promo text: Destination Unknown existed as a Producer/DJ Team between 2003 and 2005, with members Insanity, Deadline and Bass Tikal. After some years of producing Breakbeat/Jungle, a release on Knite Force and on his own label Reanimation and after having deejayed on several big events like One Nation Germany, Dreamland, One Love and Rheinkultur Cologne, Insanity started to produce Drum N Bass and teamed up in the end of 2003 with his friend Deadline who had already been producing Techno before, to form the duo Destination Unknown. They hooked up with other producers and DJs very fast and were known all over Germany. Hannover's very own DJ Bass Tikal was so confident about their production that he joined Destination Unknown and played his gigs under this name in 2004. They started their own label Incubation Records, but the project stopped after it's first release. In 2005 Deadline focussed on his study and Bass Tikal started his label Phunkfiction, while Insanity spent more and more time alone in his studio. He decided to produce on his own and finally changed his name to Dementia. At the moment he is doing a few collaborations with producers like Pyro, D-Struct (Robot Death Squad/Identity), Catacomb and the NME Click. In April 2006 the "No Escape" Remix by Bad Robot has been released as mp3 on Shadybrain - see www.shadybrain.net - and the yet unreleased tunes by Destination Unknown are finally published on T-FREE.

Original release promo text: Flame from the russian Drum and Bass capital Saint-Petersburg started electronic music production in early 2000 while studying sound engineering. After one year of Electro and Techno he began to produce Drum and Bass together with his partner Kest as "Skyform". They had a bunch of soulful/liquidfunk releases on the russian labels Track System, Resistance Music, Respect Records and Kazantip, and played on parties alongside big players like Goldie, Dom and Roland, Dillinja, Paradox, Pyro, Optiv, Shroombab, Loxy, Ink and others. Although Skyform does still exist, Flame has always been working on his own tunes, different in style from Skyform. In 2002 he was totally inspired by the new school of Neurofunk, and influenced by artists like Sinthetix, Vector Burn, Skynet, Kemal etc. Now in the year 2006, he has releases on Combat/Beatport, T-Free and the forthcoming ones on the Kinematic320 label, Lust Recordings and Darkitek.

Original release promo text: These tunes were originally produced by amex in 2000/2001 with the Yamaha RM1x, a pattern-based 16 track sequencer. The RM1x has a very own sound character and few possibilities to change the sound of the presets, so in this environment amex strongly focussed on working out arrangements. He finished and exported three tunes in the year 2000 (one of them is "Highhead") which found their way into Bad Boy Kaiza's dubplate case, and blasted dancefloors whenever being played. Most of the other tunes were only played and arranged live directly from the sequencer together with records for mixtapes, as some kind of backstage-dubplate-liveact, but had never been finished. Then in 2004 amex went into his second round with the RM1x and finished some of the old projects on it, exported every track of each tune and eventually mastered them with Cubase SX, as far as possible. So in 2005 amex' ideas of technoid arrangement from 2000/2001 finally found their expression in finished tunes - the RM1x-Collection. And though these are not good enough for a vinyl release, they are still too interesting to be not published: this is the first of at least three free mp3 3-EPs.
